Airain Resurrects the Type 20 Military Flyback Chronograph
Airain highlights the revival of the Type 20 chronograph, a timepiece originally commissioned by the French Ministry of Defense in the 1950s for military pilots. After falling dormant during the quartz crisis of the 1970s, the brand was acquired in 2020 by Dutch entrepreneur Tom van Wijlick, who sought to reunite Airain with its sister brand Lebois & Co. The modern iteration is designed as a continuation of service rather than a simple homage, maintaining the mission-first principles of the original military specifications.
The current Type 20 is engineered for professional use, featuring a 39.5mm stainless steel case and a manual-wind AMT Caliber AM2 movement. This Swiss-made caliber provides a flyback column-wheel chronograph function and a 63-hour power reserve. The watch includes a bi-compax dial layout with Super-LumiNova for legibility and a double-domed sapphire crystal, all while maintaining a 50-meter water resistance rating.
In a move to honor its heritage, Airain has partnered with the Escadrille d’Hélicoptères de Reconnaissance et d’Attaque (EHRA) n°3. This collaboration puts personalized Type 20 chronographs back onto the wrists of active French Army helicopter pilots. The watch remains faithful to the original design requirements, including oversized pushers for operation with gloves and a bi-directional 12-hour rotating bezel.
