The History and Evolution of the Marathon Pilot’s Navigator Series
Marathon traces the history of its Pilot’s Navigator series, which began in 1986 with a steel model designed for Kelly Air Force Base. Designed by Chief Watchmaker Jean Maurice Huguenin and Leon Wein, the original was engineered for quartz accuracy at high altitudes. Early models notably featured the 'ADANAC' marking—Canada spelled backwards—to signify their Canadian design origin.
The series evolved in the 1990s with the introduction of composite fibreshell cases to meet new military standards, notably used during Operation Desert Storm. While these composite models were recently phased out, Marathon has announced that a new generation featuring bio-sourced materials is currently in development to maintain weight reduction and durability for operational use.
The current retail lineup has returned to the original steel construction, featuring 41mm SSNAV and SSNAV-D models in quartz and automatic movements. Marathon highlighted two 2025 limited editions: the Blue Yonder SSNAV-D Quartz, limited to 500 pieces, and the ADANAC SSNAV-D Automatic, also limited to 500 pieces, which commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Canadian flag.
