Import Duties & Taxes Guide for Watch Buyers
When buying a watch from a seller in another country, your local customs authority may charge import duties, VAT/GST, and brokerage fees on delivery. These charges are the buyer's responsibility and are separate from the purchase price and shipping cost.
Understanding import costs is essential before purchasing from international sellers on the marketplace. A watch listed at $500 could cost $650+ landed in countries with high import taxes like Brazil or India. Use this guide to estimate your total cost before buying.

| 🇲🇽 Mexico | 15–20% | 16% IVA | Customs duties + IVA can add 30%+ to the purchase price. DHL/FedEx may charge brokerage fees. |
| 🇰🇷 South Korea | 8% | 10% VAT | Items over USD $150 attract both duty and VAT. |

How Import Costs Are Calculated
Import costs on watches are calculated based on the CIF value (Cost + Insurance + Freight) — meaning the declared price of the watch plus shipping and any insurance. Customs authorities use this total to apply the applicable duty rate.
VAT or GST is then applied on top of the CIF value plus the duty amount, which is why the effective tax rate can feel higher than the headline percentage. For example, a $500 watch shipped to the UK with $30 shipping would have VAT calculated on $530 + duty, not just the watch price.
Watches are classified under HS codes 9101 (mechanical wristwatches) and 9102 (other wristwatches including quartz). The specific sub-code can affect the duty rate — precious metal cases typically attract higher duties than steel cases.
Tips for International Buyers
Brokerage fees: Courier companies (DHL, FedEx, UPS) often charge a brokerage/handling fee of $10–$50 for processing customs clearance on your behalf. Some carriers allow you to self-clear to avoid this fee.
Postal vs courier: Items shipped via national postal services (USPS, Royal Mail) often have lower or no brokerage fees, but may take longer and have less tracking visibility.
Insurance & declarations: Always ensure the seller declares the full value. Under-declaring is illegal in most jurisdictions and can result in seizure, fines, or voided insurance claims.
